Review – The Ordinary Skincare by Deiciem

Skincare is a big deal at the moment – it’s everywhere! It’s
become really ‘cool’ to look after your skin, and have all the latest and
greatest products. Even though I love this movement, as its encouraging people
to think about the health and condition of their skin, it still feels like,
well, overkill.

I’ve watched videos and read blogs where I saw 10-12 steps
skincare regimes! Not only is this expensive and so time consuming, it’s
completely unnecessary! My Mum’s a landscape garden and proud of it! She barely
wears any makeup, and hardly ever wear sun screen (let alone serums and
toners!) despite being outside all day, and her skin is beautiful!

There’s a lot of truth in a lot of skincare claims, and in no way
am I trying to say its all rubbish, but we definitely don’t need to use every type of everything, everyday!

Our every-day routines should consist of a cleaning step (to
whatever level needed – you don’t need deep exfoliation every day!), usually a
light cleanser, and a mostiurisation step, to replenish any of the good stuff
you just dragged out with the grime of the day. You might need a few extra
steps, depending on your skin at the time; it could be the time of the month,
so you want to wear a cleansing mask to help keep the hormonal break out at bay,
or you might have been working out and be a little sweatier than usual, so need
a double cleanse, or a little exfoliation.

My problem is not with all the choice that’s out there – my issue
is that everyone thinks they need everything, every day. And it’s just not
true. Tune in to how your skin feels, and give it what it needs at the time.
Anything extra, and you’re just throwing money down the drain – literally!

clinical formulations with integrity. Aim for complexion perfection with its
nourishing oils and innovative serums that are free of parabens, sulphates and
mineral oils.

I noticed the new The Ordinary skincare range, by Deciem, getting
a lot of attention at the beginning of the year. Everyone began raving
about how great the ingredients were for the price. I myself had been a victim
of the ‘buy everything’ skincare trend, and decided to look in to The Ordinary
range because it seemed to have a lot of products, each aimed toward particular
issues, rather than a few catch-all’s. The products were advertised mainly by
ingredients and potency, so I had a bit of reading up to before I chose the 5
products I wanted to take for a spin. And that little bit of homework was so
worth it – I was not disappointed! Below I’ve written a little about my experience with each one after trying them over 4 weeks.

The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA 30ml

PRODUCT DETAILS

Serum by The Ordinary

Visibly reduces the look of spots and hyper-pigmentation

Highly-concentrated formula

Apply a few drops to face in the morning and evening as part of your skincare regime

Use sun protection in the morning

MY THOUGHTS
This stuff is honestly brilliant for my ‘once-a-month’ breakout spot, which tend to look a little more red & angry then any normal pimple I get. Mine tend to last at least a week usually, but I really noticed them losing the redness after 2 or 3 days

WHEN & HOW OFTEN I USE IT
I don’t always get a massive breakout, so I’ll probably say 3 days every 5-6 weeks. A week before my period is usually when it comes in most useful…

The Ordinary Caffeine Solution 5% + EGCG 30ml

PRODUCT DETAILS

Skincare by The Ordinary

Targets puffy eyes

Aims to reduce redness and dark shadows

Lightweight texture

Highly concentrated solution

Developed with green-tea leaves

Massage under eye in the morning and evening

Presented in UV-protected packaging

MY THOUGHTS
This was the product that drew me most to the brand, I must admit. YouTube MUA Wayne Goss was raving about this a while ago, which got me really interested! I use this every Thursday and Friday morning when the work-week is really taking its toll on my face, and it definitely makes a noticeable difference. I honestly can’t pin-point exactly what the change is, other than I just look a lot less knackered!

WHEN & HOW OFTEN I USE IT
Twice a week, in the morning before makeup (like I said, usually Thursday and Friday).

The Ordinary Azeliac Acid Suspension 10% 30ml

PRODUCT DETAILS

Azeliac Acid Suspension by The Ordinary

Aims to brighten skin tone and even out skin texture

Lightweight cream-gel texture

Reduces the appearance of blemishes

Apply to face in the morning and/or night

MY THOUGHTS
I really love this stuff, and I have to really fight myself not to use it every day! It’s an acid based treatment so it’s exfoliating those blemishes away, which is why it’s not really the best idea for use too often. I’m not sure I’ve noticed my skin being brighter, per se, but it definitely reduces the texture. It’s the skin reset I can never wait to use again!

WHEN & HOW OFTEN I USE IT
I use this twice a week, when I’m not using any other chemical exfoliation. I like to use it at the weekend, as I seem to wear more make up then and it’s a great pre-slap prep product!

The Ordinary Natural Moisturising Factors + HA 30ml

PRODUCT DETAILS

Moisturiser by The Ordinary

Aims to protect and hydrate your skin

Non-greasy formula

Lightweight creamy texture

Contains 11 amino acids

Apply when required

Best results with continued use

MY THOUGHTS
My every day mosturiser at the moment, and it’s fair to say I love it! I totally support the claim above that says its best with continued use, as my skin does shift backward in the dryness scale whenever I skip this stuff. Not at ALL greasy (more of a gel-serum texture) and really light!

WHEN & HOW OFTEN I USE IT
Ev-er-y-day! Actually, twice a day at weekends! It’s definitely gentle enough to wear this way. It’s also the best way to get best use out of all the amino acids it contains.

The Ordinary Lactic Acid 10% + HA 2% 30ml

PRODUCT DETAILS

10% Lactic Acid Peeling Formulation by The Ordinary

Exfoliates the skin

Reduces signs of inflammation and sensitivity

Apply once per day, ideally in the evening

Use a sunscreen and limit sun exposure while using this product and for a week afterwards

Contains Tasmanian pepperberry

MY THOUGHTS
Do yourself a favour and don’t use this at full concentration straight out of the gate like I did. I was bright pink for at least 4 hours (at work! – cringe!). Lactic acid is amazing stuff when it comes to acid peel and exfoliation, but your skins definitely needs time to adjust to the 10% this stuff pumps out. There is a lower % (% I think) which would be a much gentler option for someone who hasn’t used it before.

WHEN HOW OFTEN I USE IT
I love to give my face a deep clean once a week on a Friday evening after a full work-week of not being all that bothered about my face. It’s another brilliant ‘reset’ product, and I always feel squeaky clean after I use it.

So that’s all for now folks – I hope this is useful to anyone thinking of trying this range! let me know in the comments if you do try it, and what your thought are!
